Darjeeling Himalayan Mountain Railway

Ghoom, 8km south of Darjeeling

The railway, known locally as the "Toy Train" is a World Heritage Site. Making its first run in 1881 it's one of the few hill railways still operating in India. It was an incredible feat of engineering to lay the track up into the mountains in such a short distance - as well as several spiral loops (the Batasia Loop being the most famous), in many places the train goes backward and forwards on a zig-zag in order to gain height in a restricted space.

Ghoom is the destination for tourist trips from Darjeeling, a short journey that gives a flavour of the train without the need for 8-9 hours from Darjeeling down to the plains.
