Sarnath

Varanasi is one of the most sacred places to Hindus, placed as it is on the Ganges (Ganga) facing the rising sun. The aim of every Hindu is to bathe in the Ganges and wash away their sins. To die and be cremated here is the ultimate salvation of the soul.

Sarnath is the place where Buddha is reputed to have begun his ministry around 528 BC and where the original Bodhi Tree stands. Cuttings from this tree were sent to Sri Lanka (Anaradhapura) who returned the compliment when the Sarnath tree died.
