ARAJASTHAN 2010 - Bikaner

Bikaner - Old City & Bhanwar Niwas

Bikaner - Junagarh Fort

This desert town was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika (on the right) who was a descendant of the founder of Jodhpur. As with many towns in this area it lay on the caravan trade routes and was once an importnat staging post. Now it's a bustling, busy place which is beginning to take over in tourist popularity from Jaisalmer.

When we visited the Fort, Bollywood had moved in to make the film "Rani", much to everyone's annoyance. Part of the Fort was repainted, but only as much as was necessary and the filming was generally interfering with the routine of tourism.

The Bhanwar Niwas was quite something apart from a long walk and several stairs to the toilet in the middle of the night! And the room was ensuite!
