Jaisalmer - Camel riding in the Thar Desert

Jaisalmer, the Golden City (because of the colour of the ramparts in the setting sun), was founded around 1156 by Jaisala. Tourism (and the military, with Pakistan only a few kilometres away) is the major industry, and, with a huge and impressive fort perched on top of a rock, it's not hard to see why.

Apart from the Fort, the other major attraction is the Thar Desert - Jaisalmer is at the end of a finger stuck into the desert. Although the tourist camel rides only touch the edge of the desert, it's enough to get a taste for it (and for riding camels!) and, if one can get away from the hundreds of other tourist watching the sunset, it's easy to imagine what it must be like in the middle of a vast ocean of sand dunes.
